The Volksoper Wien was opened in 1898 as a speaking theater. At that time the name was „Kaiser-Jubiläums-Stadttheater“ and is nowadays the second biggest opera house of Vienna. The operas “Tosca” by Giacomo Puccini and “Salome” by Richard Strauss have been premiered in Vienna at the Volksoper. In 1987, the Volksoper was used as a filming location for the movie “The Living Daylights” of the James Bond film series, in which the house was presented to an international audience. Although as a part of the story the location of the building was transported to Bratislava, the capitol of Slovakia. In total over 400 singers, orchestra musicians, choir singers and dancers work together on artistic performances of the genres opera, operetta, musical and ballet. Singers like Richard Tauber, Leo Slezak and Maria Jeritza could already be seen on the stage in an early phase of their career. The highlights of the season in the Volksoper are „Die Fledermaus“ by Johann Strauss, „Don Giovanni“ and „Die Zauberflöte“ by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, „Der Barbier von Sevilla“ by Gioachhino Rossini and „Carmina Burana“ by Carl Orff. On the current program of the Volksoper are additionally works like „Die lustige Witwe“ by Franz Lehár, „Die Zirkusprinzessin“ by Emmerich Kálmán, „Der Kongress tanzt“ by Werner Richard Heymann, „Wie man Karriere macht, ohne sich anzustrengen“ by Frank Loesser, „La Wally“ by Alfredo Catalani, „Der Bettelstudent“ by Carl Millöcker, „Der Mann von La Mancha“ by Mitch Leigh, „Anatevka“ by Jerry Bock or „Fürst Igor“ by Alexander Borodin. The program is rounded off by special events like „Wiener Comedian Harmonists“, „Soiree: Wie man Karriere macht, ohne sich anzustrengen“ or „Helene Sommer präsentiert … Antonio Vivaldi – Die fünfte Jahreszeit“ and the „Heute im Foyer …“ – series with the Salonorchester, Mara Mastalir, the Volksoper-Octet or the Wiener Biedermeier-Solisten.
