Dr. Andreas Kain, a quiet Jewish scholar, lives with his wife in a villa on the outskirts of Vienna. When the Nazis occupy Austria, the couple plans to flee in a secretly purchased airplane.

Veza Canetti's novel was written shortly after her escape to England with Elias Canetti in 1939 and was not published until 1999 - a shocking and touching testimony to human dignity in a time of omnipresent villainy.
