RONACHER, found in inner-city Vienna, was built by the architects Ferdinand Fellner d. Ä. und Ferdinand Fellner d. J between 1871 and 1872 as a private Ltd. for journalist Max Friedländerand the former “Burgtheater” Director Heinrich Laube. Deputy Mayor Mag. Renate Brauner, in the company of Federal President Dr. Heinz Fischer and City Councillor Dr. Andreas Mailath-Pokorny, officially reopened RONACHER with the Gala Premier of The Producers on the 30th June 2008. The Ronacher was opened in 1872 as the so called „Wiener Stadttheater” with a performance of “Demetrius” by Friedrich Schiller. After a fire in 1884, Anton Ronacher bought the house in 1886 and two years later newly opened it as the “Etablissement Ronacher”. The program consisted at that time of revues, operetta guest performances, dance soloists, vocal numbers, performances of athletes, strongmen, illusionists, magicians and acrobats. After the Second World War, the Ronacher was used as the replacement stage for the destroyed Burgtheater, following the use of the building as a stage- and studio room and finally in 1987, musicals came to the house. Depending on the musical which is played at the Ronacher, there are up to 1000 seating places and 40 standing places for the audience. The first musical, which was performed at the Ronacher, was Cats (Andrew Lloyd Webber), later on home productions like „F@lco - A Cyber Show“ (Joshua Sobol and Paulus Manker) and „Chicago“ (Fred Ebb and John Kander) followed. Other musicals, which have also been performed at the Ronacher, are „The Producers“ (Mel Brooks), „Frühlings Erwachen“ (Bill T. Jones and Michael Meyer), „Tanz der Vampire“ (Jim Steinman and Michael Kunze), „Sister Act“, „Natürlich Blond“ (Nell Benjamin and Laurence O’Keefe), „Der Besuch der alten Dame“ (Moritz Schneider and Christian Struppeck), „Mary Poppins“ (Cameron Mackintosh and Disney) and „Evita“ (Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice). “Don Camillo & Peppone” is currently performed at the Ronacher, a story about the priest Don Camillo and the Communist mayor Peppone. This piece achieved fame through the novels by Giovannino Guareschi and movies with Fernandel and Gino Cervi. Starting in the end of September 2017, the musical “Tanz der Vampire” will be performed once again at the Ronacher.
