Total theater: The Marquise de Merteuil is abandoned by her lover and seeks revenge: The Vicomte de Valmont is supposed to seduce the virgin Cécile de Volanges on her behalf before her wedding night. But that doesn't challenge the notorious woman hunter Valmont enough. He proposes a perfidious agreement to the Marquise: If he succeeds in sexually conquering the extremely virtuous Madame de Tourvel and proves the act in writing, the Marquise will have to spend a night with him. A complex game of intrigue ensues from which no one emerges victorious.
