“If it is performed in Vienna, it will certainly be the biggest theater scandal of the Second Republic!” When Elfriede Jelinek announced her most recent play, an “evil farce with singing,” in 1981, not even she had any idea that BURGTHEATER would be open even without the originally planned premiere in the Burgtheater was supposed to establish her reputation as a “destroyer of the nest”. A famous family of actors, whispers in murderous artistic language: For the Swiss director and Vienna Festival director Milo Rau, to whom Jelinek has now granted exclusive rights for a late Burgtheater premiere, these will be just some of the starting points for a larger scenic panopticon: Publicity and adaptation, history (of the BURG, the theater and Europe), fascism and repression.
