The house of the Wiener Musikverein, which can be found opposite the Karlskirche, was built in 1870 after Emperor Franz Joseph entrusted the area for free. Before this happened, the “Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien” had been organized in a building at Tuchlauben since 1831, which became too small over time and did not have enough space for the audience. Two halls were planned for the Musikverein, one for chamber music concerts (now the Brahms-hall) and one for orchestra concerts (now the big Musikverein-hall, also known as the golden hall), the latter became famous worldwide due to its very successful acoustic. In 2004, four additional halls were opened: The Gottfried von Einem-hall, the Glass hall / Magna Auditorium, the Metallic hall, the Wooden hall and the Stone hall / Horst Haschek Auditorium. An international highlight, which takes place on a regular basis in the Musikverein and is broadcasted on different TV stations all over the world, is the New Year’s Day concert of the Wiener Philharmoniker. From 2006 to 2014, periodically on the evening before October 26th the “Konzert zum Nationalfeiertag” with the Wiener Symphoniker took place in the Musikverein. The Musikverein offers its stage to various artists like the Wiener Philharmoniker, Wiener Symphoniker, Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich, Orchester Wiener Akademie, Wiener Mozartorchester, ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien and the Wiener Johann Strauss Orchester. International orchestra guests, which can be found in the current program of the Musikverein are the Tschaikowskij-Symphonieorchester Moskau, Simon Bolivar Orchester, Orchestre de Paris, HR-Symphonieorchester, St. Petersburger Philharmoniker, Münchner Philharmoniker, Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. But the Musikverein doesn’t only welcome orchestras to its stage, pop-rock artists like Andreas Gabalier, Trombone Attraction, Clemencic Consort, the Küchl-Quartett, Harriet Krijgh, Magda Amara or I Barocchisti perform there as well.
