Lili Boulanger was the first woman to win the coveted "Prix de Rome" – in 1913. Shortly afterwards, she set to music an ancient Buddhist prayer that a friend had given her as a seven-year-old. The text: "Mögen alle glücklich sein, und sich in Freiheit bewegen können, jeder nach seiner Art." Lili Boulanger herself wasn't granted happiness for long: in 1917, already stricken with serious illness, she composed her moving Psalm 130. And the setting of the tragic love story of the little mermaid? It came shortly after Alma Schindler had decided against her lover Zemlinsky and for her alliance with Gustav Mahler...
