First love is always something special; for Petr Popelka, it sparked when he met Gustav Mahler: "In the early 2000s, when I began studying at the Prague Conservatory, I discovered Mahler and fell head over heels in love with his music." The fact that he was quickly appointed Chief Conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra following a highly acclaimed Mahler concert makes him all the more eager for the next encounter with Mahler's work – his Symphony No. 7, also known as the "Song of the Night."
