- Richard Strauss Don Juan / Tone Poem after Nikolaus Lenau, Op. 20
He was the legendary seducer – and ultimately ended up in hell: he is called Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Don Juan in the ancient Spanish legend, and by Nikolaus Lenau, who inspired Richard Strauss's tone poem. Both works, as well as Henze's "Overture to a Play," offer action for the ears. Carl Maria von Weber's favorite instrument was the clarinet, perhaps also because he was commissioned by the Bavarian King Maximilian I to write his Concerto No. 1. Widely played internationally, this is (still?) an insider tip for Vienna.
