When will the bloodshed end? In 1941, the Babi Yar massacre took place outside Kyiv at the hands of the Nazi occupiers, to which Shostakovich immortalized a momentous memorial 20 years later in his 13th Symphony. Also in the 1960s, one of the composer's most important film scores was created—for Shakespeare's Hamlet (directed by Grigory Kozintsev). Berlioz also shared this enthusiasm for Shakespeare in his choral-orchestral work "Tristia": moving music that culminates in a Marche funèbre for Hamlet. Hong Kong-born, internationally sought-after conductor Elim Chan, most recently a portrait artist for the Society of Friends of Music, continues her collaboration with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.
