As the Scottish nobleman Macbeth and his friend Banquo ride home from a victorious battle, they encounter three wild witches on a lonely heath.
These predict a great future for Macbeth: he would one day become king! The two friends ride on in disbelief. But unexpected news awaits them at Cawdor Castle: King Duncan has announced his visit and will also spend the night at Cawdor Raste! Macbeth's wife, Lady Macbeth, now senses the fulfillment of the witches' prophecy: what if Macbeth were to murder the sleeping king? Then Macbeth himself would be king. And so it happens - but the terrible act brings nightmares and remorse. Macbeth and his lady can no longer stop their game to maintain power - and finally Macbeth has the whole of Scotland against him...
