The Orangerie Schönbrunn was most likely erected in 1754 and served with the adjacent Citron house as a garden for citrus plants. The Orangery Schönbrunn was built after Versailles, the greatest Orangery building in the world. The underfloor heating, which was already installed at that time, enabled a regulation of the climate, which made the hibernation of the plants and fruit possible. Emperor Joseph II used the Orangery for celebrations, like several spring parties, and in the beginning of the 20th century the first International Botany congress took place there. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart performed in the Orangery several times during his career. In the 80s, the Orangery was renovated and established as a popular event venue, only a part of the building is used as a winter home for plants now. The Schloss Schönbrunn Orchester, a Viennese chamber orchestra, performs regularly in the other part of the Orangery Schönbrunn, accompanied by a ballet duo, a baritone and a soprano. Especially the works of the Strauss family and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart are performed by the Schloss Schönbrunn Orchester. During the winter period, the Schloss Schönbrunn Orchester cannot be seen in the Orangery Schönbrunn, because it tours through various countries, that’s when the Schloss Schönbrunn Ensemble performs there. The concert is divided into two parts: In the first part duets, arias, sinfonias and ouvertures by Wolfang Amadeuzs Mozart (e.g. „Don Giovanni“, „Die Entführung aus dem Serail“, „Così fan tutte“, „Die Zauberflöte“ and „Le Nozze di Figaro”) are performed. Subsequently in the second part polkas, waltzes and operetta arias by Johann Strauss are presented (e.g. „Radetzkymarsch“, „Wiener Blut“, „Eine Nacht in Venedig“, „Donauwalzer“, „Der Zigeunerbaron“ and „Die Fledermaus“).
