Dramma per musica in three acts

    Libretto by Nicola Francesco Haym

All good things come in threes: At the end of his Annus Mirabilis 1724/25, George Frideric Handel succeeded in composing a third work after Giulio Cesare in Egitto and Tamerlano, which can be counted among the best that he ever wrote for the stage. In January 1725, Rodelinda had its celebrated premiere at the King's Theater London. There were frequent revivals during Handel's lifetime, and finally the modern Handel renaissance was initiated in 1920 with a performance of Rodelinda at the first Handel Festival in Göttingen. At the center of the plot is a strong woman who will stop at nothing to save her husband - a real prima donna role, which is now embodied in Vienna by Karina Gauvin. Raffaele Pe, who can also be seen in Gasparini's Ambleto this season, not only takes on the role of the male lead, but also that of the conductor and leads his ensemble La Lira di Orfeo.
