Libretto by Apostolo Zeno
The story of the shepherdess Griselda is one of the most popular opera subjects of the 18th century. No wonder, because the wedding between the King of Sicily and a simple shepherdess, who has to defend her virtue through a series of tests until she proves to be the true queen in the end, offers material for varied situations and diverse emotions. The Italian composer Giovanni Bononcini wrote his version of Griselda in 1722 for the King's Theater in London, where he was the house composer together with none other than George Frideric Handel. The opera's recitatives were long lost, and only in recent years has the lyrical but incredibly imaginative score been reconstructed. Max Emanuel Cencic, countertenor and director of the Bayreuth Baroque festival, has strongly advocated for the rediscovery of this pearl of baroque opera art and will now also present the work in Vienna together with conductor Benjamin Bayl.
