MUSIC BY MUDARRA, MURCIA, RUIZ DE RIBAYAZ AND PISADOR WITH TRADITIONAL PIECES FROM SPAIN AND SOUTH AMERICA

On the banks of the Guadalquivir in Seville stands the twelve-sided “Torre del Oro” (tower of gold), the city’s landmark. For many centuries the harbour in front of the Torre del Oro was the point of departure for Spanish galleons that sailed to South America and returned to Seville laden with gold treasure. Naming their programme after this landmark, L’Arpeggiata undertakes a musical journey between the Old World and the New. The starting point is the music of the Seville composer Alonso Mudarra, a master of the 16th century. In addition, the “living Baroque” found in South American traditional music is explored, because Baroque instruments and melodies are still part of the musical culture there today. Spanish and South American jácaras, fandangos, folías, canarios and chaconas, Venezuelan joropos and pájarillos enter into dialogue with works by Alonso Mudarra, Santiago de Murcia, Lucas Ruiz de Ribayaz and Diego Pisador as well as with traditional music from Spain and South America.
