In the Mühlviertel region, they say that it takes three things to become a grown man: you have to father a child, build a house and plant a tree.
Benedikt Mitmannsgruber is not a man like any other. He is thin, weak, has a moustache, wears an old Norwegian sweater and is a classic antihero, a sensitive loser type.
Instead of building a house and becoming a father, he sits with a cup of St. John's wort tea in a sparsely furnished back room in a dreary city and writes funny stories.
At some point his family realizes that he is not aging.
While his friends are getting older and older, taking on responsibility, buying cars, having children and working, Mitmannsgruber is stuck in time. He wants to stay in his mid-20s forever. He keeps putting off growing up until it is unattainable and uncatchable.
And then he packs his things. With no goal in mind, he tours the stages of Austria and Germany. He acts on television, wins prizes and gets underwear sent to him anonymously.
Can art save the disorientated good-for-nothing?
Can the disorientated good-for-nothing perhaps even save art?
"The Strange Case of Benedikt Mitmannsgruber" is the large-scale fate of a young antihero and the people he meets in his life: He finds love, meets conspiracy theorists, is disappointed, has to go into isolation and learns something of timeless importance: his dog, his girlfriend and avocado spread.
A program about masculinity and identity, revelations and turmeric, lockdowns and conspiracy theorists.
