“Werther” is an opera in four acts with the music by the French composer Jules Massenet and the libretto by von Édouard Blau, Paul Milliet and Georges Hartmann, based on Goethe’s epistolary novel “The Sorrows of Young Werther”. Initially, the opera should have been performed at the "Opéra-Comique" theater in Paris, but after a local fire, the opera was moved to the Vienna State Opera and premiered in a German version on the 16^th February 1892. Due to its success, the Opera had 61 more performances over the next four and today, the opera is regarded as Massenet's best opera among connoisseurs.
