Based on the historical Genoese Doge Simon Boccanegra at the end of the Middle Ages, Verdi portrays a ruler who desperately tries to rule well, keep hostile factions in check and ultimately becomes a victim himself, as a kind of scapegoat.
Musically, Giuseppe Verdi's opera Simon Boccanegra, radically reworked around 25 years after its premiere together with the congenial librettist Arrigo Boito and presented anew in 1881, is one of his great, mature late works, which already point ahead to Otello and Falstaff.Like Rigoletto, Don Carlo and Aida, Simon Boccanegra is an opera of duets.
