The opera is based on the fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel" by the Brothers Grimm. The music of the opera falls, similar to Richard Wagner’s music, in the era of late-romantic opera and Humperdinck himself called his work in an ironic joke a "Kinderstubenweihfestspiel." Hänsel and Gretel” premiered, with Richard Strauss as conductor, in Weimar on the 23th of December in 1893.
