Figaro, the Count's servant, has become engaged to Susanna, the Countess's maid. The Count pursues Susanna. The countess suffers from her husband's infidelity. Figaro hatches a plan to keep the Count in his closets. After a “great day” (as the subtitle of Beaumarchais's original play) full of disguises, misunderstandings and other comical complications, Figaro gets his Susanna and the Count has no choice but to apologize to the Countess.
In her production, Lotte de Beer examines the themes of sex and power from the perspective of different characters. In the four acts of the opera we each see the world from a different perspective: Count, Susanna, Countess and Barbarina.
