Where the Vienna Ring Boulevard meets the green of the City Park, one of the most exclusive and splendid buildings of Vienna was constructed in the mid 19th Century in the style of the Italian Renaissance: the Kursalon. (Source: Kursalon)

The Wiener Kursalon (aka Kursalon Hübner) was built between 1865 and 1867, and is located in the Stadtpark on the Wiener Ringstraße. The Kursalon was originally planned to be used as a coffee house and offered curative waters to drink, although this usage was not popular amongst the visitors. The initial ban of events for pleasure was withdrawn and in 1868 Johann Strauß jr. played the first concert as a concertmaster. Subsequently the Kursalon turned into a famous meeting place for the Viennese upper class, in which dance events and promenade concerts took place. The Kursalon consists of several rooms: The Strauss hall, which can hold up to 700 people and is used for events in a representative setting. The Schubert hall can be used as a room on its own for up to 300 guests or as an addition to the Strauss hall. The Lehar hall is part of the restaurant “Johann” but can also be used as an addition to the Schubert hall. The salon orchestra Alt Wien performs periodically in the Kursalon with the “Strauss and Mozart concerts”. It is one of the most famous orchestras that plays classic Viennese music. Special events take place in the Kursalon on New Year’s Day, New Year’s Eve and Christmas. An interesting fact about the salon orchestra Alt Wien is that it performs without a conductor. A concertmaster leads playing a violin just like Johann Strauss did at the time. The repertoire of the orchestra consists of waltzes, duets, arias, piano concerts and operetta melodies. Some of the works, which are played at the Kursalon as a part of those concerts, are „Champagner-Galopp“, „Eine kleine Nachtmusik“, „Wiener Blut“, „Donauwalzer“, „Banditen-Galopp“, „Eine Nacht in Venedig“ and „Rondo alla turca“.
