Herr Puntila und sein Knecht Matti

Whenever the landowner Puntila has drunk, he becomes a humanitarian. Then he quickly gets engaged to several workers, employs sick people out of pity and philosophizes about life with his chauffeur Matti. As soon as he sobers up, his mood changes. Puntila's daughter Eva tries to get her father away from alcohol and herself away from her own fiancé. She teams up with Matti, but both have to realize that they not only suffer from Puntila's alcohol addiction, but above all from the rule of capital.

Bertolt Brecht wrote HERR PUNTILA AND HIS KNECHT MATTI together with Hella Wulijoki in exile in Finland in 1940/41 based on her play “The Sawdust Princess”.
