An ominous image is at the center of Marius von Mayenburg's comedy: After their father's death, the siblings Nicola and Philipp find an inconspicuous painting in the attic, signed “A. Hiller.” Or could it be “A. “Hitler”? It would be better, because that would increase its value significantly. However, the provenance is unknown, and only with this can a picture of Adolf Hitler be sold profitably. While the Jewish sister-in-law advocates the destruction of the picture, Nicola and Philipp feverishly research the family history. Or are they constructing a new one?
With points ranging from light to bitter, Marius von Mayenburg explores the questions of whether the separation of work and artist should be possible without restrictions and to what extent moral principles apply when financial profit is involved.
The British director Ramin Gray staged at the Royal Court Theater as well as at the Salzburg Festival and at the Volkstheater Vienna. Celebrated internationally, he is now presenting his first work for the Josefstadt Kammerspiele.
