Things are so stupidly set up in the world. You should be young at the age of forty, that's when you get something out of it.

A man cheats. His wife knows. People don't talk about it. She has decided to “just” punish him by increasing his distance. A close friend of the family dies and rumors spread. Did he take his own life out of love for the same woman he cheated on? Because she rejected him? The husband can no longer tolerate his wife's virtuousness, which he sees as heartlessness. He leaves, to the mountains, to someone else. Disappointed and alienated, his wife begins a relationship. How can he deal with her infidelity?

In his classic, Arthur Schnitzler lets life models and life lies collide. What does love mean? What marriage? What role do loyalty and jealousy play? What do we owe our fellow human beings?
