Where do the “real” tears flow? On stage or in real life? In his comedy, which premiered in 1871, the Russian playwright Alexander Ostrovsky contrasts two ragged Russian provincial actors with a rich, hedonistic society. Not only the boards that mean the world separate actors from respected society, but also diametrically opposed values. In his multifaceted characters, Alexander Ostrovsky masterfully combines the range of human characteristics and stubbornness, making his piece a reflection of humanity.

For her sixtieth stage anniversary, Andrea Jonasson, the grande dame of acting, is finally back on the stage of the Theater in der Josefstadt. The two audience favorites Herbert Föttinger and Robert Meyer can be seen at their side as vagabond actors. Robert Meyer, former long-time ensemble member of the Burgtheater and successful director of the Volksoper, will make his Josefstadt debut as the comedian Arkadij.
