    "Hiob"

Mendel Singer is a man of faith. He leads a modest but contented life with his wife, Deborah, and their three children in the middle of a Russian village. However, with the birth of his sick son, Menuchim, Mendel's path of suffering begins, marked by the calamity of the trials God imposes on him. Poverty, war, and emigration to America cause Mendel to despair of the goodness and justice of his God. Only when he turns away from God does a miracle occur...

Job is an archaic figure. Tried by harsh blows of fate, he patiently receives his bad news. In his modern retelling of the biblical story, Joseph Roth takes us into the world of his childhood. Homelessness and the loss of identity are themes that moved the author throughout his life.

With a touching family story, powerful, clear language, and abundant poetry, the novel "Hiob" raises questions about the meaning of suffering and the power of faith. The adaptation and production are in the hands of Alexandra Liedtke, known for numerous productions at the Vienna State Opera, the Burgtheater Vienna, the Salzburg Festival, and others.
