    “Das Rheingold” from Richard Wagners opera tetralogy is the shortest of the 4 operas and deals with the conflict between power and love.

    Alberich, the dwarf from the people of the Nibelungen, desires one of the "Rheintöchter". However, they refuse him. Therefore he decides to steal the Rheingold to forge a ring, with which he manages to enslave the people of the Nibelungen.

    The tetralogy consists of:

    - Das Rheingold

    - Die Walküre

    - Siegfried

    - Götterdämmerung

    Richard Wagner worked on the tetralogy from 1848 - 1874 and "das Rheingold" premiered in 1869 in Munich at the national theatre.  Not only "das Rheingold" but the whole opera cycle is considered, next to his works like Tristan und Isolde, Parsifal and Lohengrin as one of his greatest masterpieces.
