The Tale of Hoffmann is a fantastic opera in five acts with the music by Jacques Offenbach. Inspired by E.T.A Hoffmann's narratives such as the Sandmann, Rat Krespel and The Adventures of New Year's Eve, Offenbach asked his librettist Jules Barbier to write the libretto. In contrast to the literary model, in which the narratives are independent stories, the five opera images are connected by Offenbach's skillful staging. Offenbach himself was no longer able to experience the premiere at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in 1881, since he died a year earlier in Cologne.
